On Saturday afternoon, the Duke Blue Devils lost an ACC road game to the Wake Forst Denon Deacons, (Wake Forest, lol!!!, Excuse me, the UNC fan in me came out for a second there).
Also lost for Duke was star sophomore, Kyle Filipowski, but it was the way he was injury that has everybody up in arms. Filipowski, waa injured, after the game, as Wake Forest fans excited stormed the court to celebrate their team’s victory.
Video showed Filipowski walking off the court, getting tangled amongst fans and then helped off.
Obviously, I, even a Duke hater, doesn’t want to see this. Filipowski is one of the country’s best players 🤮, on a good team, 🤮, you want him healthy, especially for the UNC-Duke rematch in a couple weeks.
So, yeah, when CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish says something has to be done about court storming, agreed. The NCAA or ACC, in this case, could enforce a rule, all players and university personnel off the floor before the celebration could commence. I have no problem with that.
That’s where my agreement with Mr. Parrish ends.
Parrish, would go on to say in speaking out against court storming, of Filipowski, ‘a player as recognizable as him’, ‘and a brand as recognizable as Duke’. That’s fine Gary, but the same thing happened recently to Caitlin Clark of Iowa, heard of her? To refresh your menory, she recently set a new record for career points scored by a woman in Division I and has basically introduced a ton of new people to basketball in the last two years.
My point? VIRTUALLY THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO HER!!!! WHERE WAS YOUR OUTRAGE THEN?!?
Indiana’s women team upset Clark’s Iowa team, Clark suffered an injury in a similar court storming incident, to which she confirmed in a press conference latee, she was okay. That was it, no outrage, no, ‘I’ve written colums on this’, ‘this is damgerous’.
But because it’s a brand, like Duke, Filipowski gets the coverage and the outrage? And don’t tell me Filipowski is more popular than Caitlin Clark, because on her worst day, that wouldn’t be true.
It’s hypocritical, unfair and nonsense.
You want to fix court storming, fine, look at a larger sample size than a kid from Duke turning an ankle because it affects the NCAA/ACC and Duke’s pockets and speaking about the ‘outrage’. Look at the incidents of students getting injured or worse.
